In memory

I would like to take the time to remember all the people who lost their life 8 years ago today and for the brave men and women who gave their life trying to protect and save them. I remember I was on my way to Physics class with Mr. McManus and my friend stopped me in the hall before we got there to tell me what had happend.  I would also like to say thank you to the members of our armed services and for Firefighters and police officers everywhere.  Thank you for what you do and for what you sacrifice.

This day marks another tragedy that could easily be forgotten.  7 years ago a good friend of mine named Chris commited suicide.  He was a wonderful person and friend.  When we were kids we played almost every day together.  We were in kindergarten class together and used to stand next to each other and paint pictures.  He was facinated with insects and we learned from each other as we explored and caught and observed them.  Praying mantis' were what really facinated him.  Every time I see one I can't help but think of Chris and I say a little prayer for his family.  Chris, you are missed.  You will always have a special place in my heart, even though we lost touch through MS and HS we always brought a smile to each others face in the hallway and finally after 10 years we finally had a class together again Junior year and had some laughs.  I think about you more often then you might think.  I remember all the funny tapes we made saying stupid stuff and then playing it back and laughing our faces off.  I remember walking the perimeter of both our houses catching as many daddy long legs as we could.  I remember when amanda fell in you kiddy pool in your back yard when we were walking through it and amanda wore your bath robe while your mom dried her clothes.  And mowing the lawn 358349083908 times when your family got that reel mower at a garage sale and your grass was pretty much non existent the whole summer.  I remember when you used to climb on your fence and yell across 2 yards "Can I come over and play" and we would wait for you to run down the street.  I remember building ginger bread houses at christmas time.  Chris I have nothing but good memories of you and I will see you in heaven some day.  Maybe we can sit around a tape recorder and make silly tapes again.

something fun since my last few posts have been a little sucky

This post is all about my quest to stay away from refined sugars!

I started a diet about a year ago called Somersize by Suzanne Somers, and it is awesome.  First of all its not a diet its a life style but keeping it simple I will call it a diet.  What other diet can you eat steak, full fat sour cream on your fajitas, cream sauces, and piles of cheese.   And eat as much of it as you want.....yup thats right, no measuring, no counting calories or points.  Just make delicious food and eat as much as you want.  Thats why diets don't work because when you are cutting calories you are starving yourself and when you starve yourself your body stores up more in your fat reserves and then its SLOWS down your metabolism instead of jump starting it like these diets claim to do.  Then when you lose your weight and go off your diet and start eating "normal" again, you gain it all back and sometimes faster because your metabolism is all out of whack.

Its all based on how you body processes sugars so you can't mix your protien/fats with you carbs.  It's all explained in Suzannes books and it makes sense, i am just not going to try and explain it all here.  But you can eat carbs!  And you can eat fatty yumminess.  Once you get down to your goal weight you can cheat here and there and not gain, just maintain.  I lost 10lbs in a few weeks and I ate Creamy Tex Mex pork chops, bbq chicken, lasagna, pasta etc.  My mom has went down like 3 pant sizes in the course of the last year.  It really does work, the weight falls off with out doing a single crunch or running a single mile.

Other benefits.

*helps you body naturally balance your hormones because cortisol (a hormone) is directly related to your diet and especially your sugar intake.   This also affects your weight and mood.

*gives you more energy, due to the above

*boosts your metabolism so you can "cheat" and not feel like you gained 5 lbs in a day.

*eliminates empty calories, refined sugar, processed and food full of preservatives (i.e. anything from a box or a bag)

It works! Trust me! and its really fun reading lables and finding new things without sugar as an ingredient or coming up with your own recipes.  And your grocery shopping consists of a circle around the outside where your meat, dairy, produce etc. are, i go down the isles for an occasional spice or can of broth.

I will admit it can be overwhelming at first deciding which foods you can eat in what combinations but when your realize what you can eat that tastes good and not like "diet food" or like you didn't get enough, you will never go back to any other way.

Tonight I am having "In a Hurry Beef Curry" with creamy cucumber dill dip and zucchini.  YUMMY!!
